Tuesday, we went on a tour of the city of Lynchburg. We first met with Mayor Joan Foster in her office. She was very delighted in speaking with the students and hopes someday to travel to Glauchau and visit there. The day prior to our visit, she had received a gift from Glauchau's mayor.

Next we went to the Lynchburg Police Department and had a tour of the department, along with being able to view the two vehicles used in tactical control and crime scene investigations, along with an explanation of all the items that are used. Saskia seemed to enjoy handling one of the weapons used in tactical control.

From there, we headed to the Old Courthouse which is now a museum.

We then toured each monument along the steps of Monument Terrace and then it was time for lunch. We had a wonderful lunch prepared just for us at the Terrace on the James. We were able to look out over the city and the James River as we enjoyed some time to sit and relax while enjoying our lunch and conversation.

The day ended with a continued walking tour of the city, ending up at the Lynchburg Visitor Center, where Annika's host mom is the director of the Visitor Center.

After dinner, all of the students, the two chaperones, some parents and some of the American teens spent time shopping at the River Ridge Mall and also Target.

Tomorrow and Thursday the teens will all be in school.

Monticello Trip

On Monday, the students took a bus ride of about an hour and a half to Monticello, one of Thomas Jefferson's homes. They took two tours of the home and also the plantation community tour. All had a good time and were able to relax on the way home on the bus.

On Sunday afternoon, we had a picnic with the membership of Lynchburg Sister City. There was much good food and plenty of friends to visit with. We had a great time playing frisbee, taking walks, and just talking together. A few even took a motorcycle ride with Ken, one of our host fathers.

We had a pizza party with all the German guests and their respective host families. There was lots of pizza eaten, along with a large number of Oreo cookies and other goodies! The students all had a great time getting to know one another, playing games, talking, taking pictures, and 'just being teenagers'!

Dear friends in Lynchburg!

My name is Haldis Lindenhayn, I`m the mom of Martin Lindenhayn. He
was one of the exchange students from Glauchau in Germany.
I want to say you thousand thanks for the wonderful days in your town
and in the host families. Those were unforgettable days for our kids.
Yesterday they arrived well in Leipzig and we, the parents met our
kids at the airport at 11:15. All were tired but very happy.
Martin told me a lot about the many activities, of the experiences in
Lynchburg, of the visit in Washington, of the hiking in your nature
and of all the loving people. He loves Lynchburg and the friends, who
live in your town.

Martin was living with Rob, Annette and Robbie Gilbert. They were
nice parents and a brother for him, a fantastic family! It gives
me much pleasure, that we have a very good contact. In the next
spring we shall see in Glauchau. I'm very happy! I like to say:
Thank you, dear Rob, dear Annette and dear Robbie! in this blog.

I'm Tuan Pham Minh and I live in Waldenburg - it's a little town near Glauchau.
I'm 16 years old, but I'm really small for my age.
Well, I've got a 13 years old sister and as you can imagine my parents are from Vietnam.
What I like is nearly every type of sport, for example handball and volleyball.
I think it would be great if we ( the German boys) could try playing football in Lynchburg.
Like most of us teenagers I like to play video games on the computer and every other console.
I also like to meet friends and to play the guitar.

This is Lisa Horn (on the left side of the picture) and Henrike Tetzner (on the right side of the picture). I will turn 18 in October when I’m in Lynchburg and Henrike is 18 years old. We live in a small village near Glauchau it’s called Niederlungwitz. We are really good friends and we prefer to do some things together. We both also like to listening to music, to go out with friends and to be together with our family.

My name is Stephanie Pester and I´m living in a small town in east Germany. I`ve got a little brother but no pets (except of fish) because Iunfortunately have got an allergy against animal hair, especially cats, dogs, guinea-pigs and rabbits. So it would be optimal for me to go to a host family, which has not too many pets. .

Die gestrige Besichtigungstour ist nach meiner Einschätzung recht gut
angekommen.
Nachdem ich zum Auftakt ein Unternehmensvideo in englischer Sprache und
einige weitere Daten und Fakten zum Standort vermittelt habe, fuhren
wir mit
zwei Kleinbussen direkt in die Montage.
Die Besichtigung der Golf- und Passatmontage und des anschließenden
Finishbereiches konnte dank einer mobilen Kommunikationsanlage des
Besucherdienstes von allen gut verfolgt werden. Obwohl bislang noch
keiner
der amerikanischen Gäste ein Automobilwerk von innen gesehen hat (das
höchste der Gefühle war wohl eine Schokoladenfabrik...), gaben sich die
Gäste recht interessiert.
Leider konnten diesmal keine Fotos im Werk gemacht werden. Ich habe
nur eine
Gruppenaufnahme am Werkstor.
Die amerikanischen Schüler - leider war es nicht für die gesamte Gruppe
möglich - haben jedoch eine Präsenttasche mit einer Pressemappe, einer
Foto-CD, dem Video zur Firma, einem Fahrzeugmodell und einem Kuli
erhalten.
Soviel zur Besichtigung des Werkes.
Ich hoffe, am Sonntag im Hotel Meyer erscheinen zu können.

The Berufsakademie, or BA, in Glauchau, Germany is devoted to providing its students with a complete education. As a university of cooperative education, the Glauchau State Academy, each student is able to work in collaboration with a local company to gain practical knowledge. This unique training enables students to pursue a successful career upon the completion of their studies. The BA offers a three year program geared towards the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses. Currently, 2147 companies work in cooperation with the State Academy.
According to the Academy, the program offers three distinct advantages to students. The first advantage is the short time period. In most American colleges and universities, a bachelor’s degree is obtained after four years of study; this program offers a similar degree in only three years. A second advantage is that each graduate emerges from his or her studies qualified and well-equipped for the job market. The final advantage is the low cost of education. There is no tuition cost to attend the academy. Students are only responsible for paying room and board.
There are two major sectors of study: technical and economic. In the technical sector, eight engineering and technology degrees are offered; whereas in the economic sector, five industry and business degrees exist. The final examination is equivalent to the Fachhochschulabschluss berufsbefähigend, and is accepted throughout Europe.
In 2005, a new technology building was completed. This new facility houses state-of-the-art machinery and laboratories. One highlight of the building is the use of solar energy to heat the building’s water. These panels offer another means of practical study to the students. The students are able to utilize what they have learned in the classroom regarding solar energy and apply the knowledge to the solar cells.
The president of the academy is Prof. Dr. Manfred Hübsch.

The adventure begins early Monday morning (for my teens, anything before noon is early) as the teens and parents arrive, each with a different smile. Smiles with excitement, confidence, reservation. and "we're cool lets get this thing started” all rolled up in into one. For some of the parents (maybe all) throw in a good dose of ‘my baby or ______ is going for two whole weeks to Germany without me and I am feeling a bit _________. Mindy and I went over last minute details with each teen and parents. Lynn reviewed again what to expect at the airports and what the first day may be like. When the flight was called you could sense the next level of excitement, they gathered for the obligatory group photo and got into the first security line. Just a reminder for all, don’t try to carry on a full tube of toothpaste or a full can of deodorant. They do check and reject!

The small plane took off on time. Thomas Schreiter call early Tuesday morning to let us know that all had arrived safe and sound at the host home.

Welcome to the Glauchau 2007 Blog!

Greetings, everyone!

Can you believe it's been over a year since our inaugural group of students along with two parents/chaperones went to Glauchau in April, 2006? (See picture of our students with their new German friends!) A lot has happened since then! Not only did the group have a wonderful experience visiting Glauchau, we hosted a group of twelve students and two teachers from there in October. And, as of April 30th, Glauchau officially became our sister city! Whew! It has been a busy year!

So, here we are with another group of area students leaving for Glauchau on June 18th, and Lynn Dodge suggested setting up a blog for the students to keep in touch and post news about their trip. So, now we have a blog set up!

We invite all of their parents and friends as well as our Sister City members and friends, here and in Glauchau, to visit the blog and post comments for our travelers or the folks at home. Let me know if you have any questions about using the blog at my blog e-mail address: bbsistercity@gmail.com.
